About Subnautica 2
Unknown Worlds is taking the franchise to a completely different world — a never-before-seen alien moon with no connection to the locations, characters, or creatures from the first two games. The sequel runs on Unreal Engine 5, which is a major departure from the Unity-based originals and should bring a significant jump in visual quality and environmental detail.
For the first time in the series, you can bring friends along. Subnautica 2 supports online co-op for up to four players, meaning you can split up resource runs, build bases together, and explore dangerous biomes with backup. Solo play is still fully supported.
One of the more interesting additions is a DNA modification system that lets players alter their own biology to gain new abilities — a concept that was originally planned for the first game but never made it in. The sequel also promises expanded crafting, more vehicles, and additional tools and equipment as the early access period progresses.
Early access begins in May 2026 on Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Windows Store, and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. Unknown Worlds has stated there will be no season passes — the game will receive free content updates over time, following the same model as the previous entries.
