How the upgrade comparison works
Pick two items, pick your spec, pick the content type (raid single-target, AoE, Mythic+) and the tool runs each item's stat profile through your spec's stat weights. The output tells you which is the upgrade and by roughly how much.
Stat weights come from a maintained spec dataset that reflects current-patch tuning. They get refreshed as community sims update their numbers each major patch. Item stats come live from the Blizzard item database the same day they're added to the game.
The exact question this answers
"A drop just popped. My current piece is X. Is this an upgrade for what I'm doing?"
You don't need a 20-minute Droptimizer run to answer that. You need 5 seconds. The stat-weight approach gets you 90% of the answer at 1% of the wait time. For close calls or items that meaningfully change your gear pattern (4-piece set breakpoint, weapon enchant change, trinket effect swap), sim it. For everything else, this is faster.
Edge cases worth knowing
- Set bonuses aren't in the math. If swapping a piece breaks your 4-piece, the calculator won't flag it. Always sanity-check tier set breakpoints manually.
- Trinket on-use / proc effects. Stat-weight comparisons miss trinkets that have unique on-use cooldowns or procs. For trinket comparisons specifically, the damage calculator on this site or a full sim does better.
- Off-spec / hybrid considerations. Comparing assumes you stay in the picked spec. A piece that's flat for your raid spec but a major upgrade for your M+ off-spec should be evaluated separately.
